Every task below is dated from the move date you enter — no working out which week “six weeks before” actually is while you’re also trying to pack a kitchen.

12 weeks before

Fri 21 Aug

  • Instruct a conveyancer and clear their ID and source-of-funds checks

11 weeks before

Fri 28 Aug

  • Submit your full mortgage application and get the formal offer in writing

10 weeks before

Fri 4 Sept

  • Get a survey — your own in England, Wales and NI, the seller's Home Report in Scotland

8 weeks before

Fri 18 Sept

  • Get quotes from at least 3 removal companies
  • Start decluttering — sell, donate, or bin what you won't take

7 weeks before

Fri 25 Sept

  • Chase your conveyancer until the property searches are back and read them

6 weeks before

Fri 2 Oct

  • Notify your children's school of the move, if applicable

5 weeks before

Fri 9 Oct

  • Agree a completion date with everyone in the chain

4 weeks before

Fri 16 Oct

  • Sign your contract and send the deposit to your conveyancer
  • Arrange buildings insurance from the day you become legally bound, not completion day
  • Set up Royal Mail redirection to your new address
  • Notify your bank, insurers, and any subscriptions of your new address
  • Book time off work for moving day, if needed

3 weeks before

Fri 23 Oct

  • Exchange contracts — conclude missives in Scotland — and confirm your deposit has gone through

2 weeks before

Fri 30 Oct

  • Arrange parking or loading access at both ends — a permit or a suspended bay if the street needs one
  • Confirm your removal company booking in writing
  • Start packing everything you won't need before the move

1 week before

Fri 6 Nov

  • Confirm transfer/final-read dates with gas, electric, water, and broadband suppliers
  • Pack an essentials box — kettle, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes

Moving day

Fri 13 Nov

  • Take meter readings at your old property before you leave
  • Collect keys and take meter readings at your new property

After the move

Fri 20 Nov

  • Register with a GP surgery near your new address
  • Update your driving licence and vehicle registration with the DVLA
  • Register to vote at your new address
  • Update your TV Licence address
  • Sort council tax — or domestic rates in Northern Ireland — at both addresses
